“Common Good”

“Common Good”

"Good for all people" refers to
actions, policies, or principles that benefit everyone in a society, often called the "common good," emphasizing shared rules, courtesy, and participation, as well as religious teachings encouraging doing good to everyone, especially fellow believers, by being helpful, generous, and returning good for evil. It means acting with kindness and contributing to collective well-being, rather than just self-interest, often involving generosity, helping others, and fostering spiritual or practical support.

  • Shared rules: Following laws and general courtesy for everyone's benefit.

  • Universal kindness: "Do good to all people, especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Galatians 6:10).
  • Return good for evil: Not retaliating with wrong for wrong but actively seeking to bless others (Romans 12:17, 21).
  • Generosity: Being willing to share and help, even when it's difficult.
  • Spiritual & practical help: Promoting others' spiritual well-being and meeting practical needs like founding hospitals or providing clean water.

Key actions to "do good"
  • Be helpful: Offering assistance and being useful to others.
  • Be generous: Sharing resources and being willing to give.
  • Be kind: Complimenting others and brightening their day.
  • Be forgiving: Not holding grudges and responding with love.
  • Persevere: Continuing to do good even when tired or unappreciated, trusting in a greater purpose.
