Imitators of God

Imitators of God

"Imitators of God" (Ephesians 5:1)
calls believers to mirror God’s character, particularly through self-sacrificial love, holiness, and walking in light rather than darkness. As beloved children, Christians are encouraged to mimic God’s actions—such as compassion, forgiveness, and righteousness—rather than conforming to worldly norms.

Key aspects of being imitators of God include:
  • Walking in Love: Mirroring Christ’s sacrificial love, which serves as the standard for interacting with others.
  • Living in Light: Reflecting righteousness and truth, avoiding the "unfruitful works of darkness" (e.g., immorality, impurity, greed).
  • Moral Transformation: Putting off the "old self" and embodying the "new self" created in God's likeness.
  • Practical Application: Applying knowledge of God's character to daily life, including gratitude and speaking with grace.

The call to be imitators is not based on human effort alone but is a response to the transformation already initiated by God, allowing believers to act as a counterculture. The phrase implies a continuous, growing process of maturation rather than instant perfection.
