What Love is… ❤️

What Love is… ❤️

Biblical love—most frequently described by the Greek word agape—is defined as a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional commitment to the well-being of others. Unlike modern or "worldly" definitions that often prioritize fleeting feelings or personal satisfaction, biblical love is presented as a deliberate choice and actionrooted in the character of God.

Core  Characteristics (1 Corinthians 13)

Known as the "Love Chapter," 1 Corinthians 13 provides a specific blueprint for this type of love:
  • Active Virtues: It is patient, kind, and rejoices in the truth.
  • What it Avoids: It does not envy, boast, or behave rudely; it is not arrogant, self-seeking, or easily angered.
  • Endurance: It "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things".
  • Permanence: While other spiritual gifts (like prophecy or tongues) are temporary, love is considered eternal and "never fails".

Biblical vs. Worldly Love

Biblical love differs fundamentally from secular concepts of love in its source, focus, and conditions:

Feature Biblical (Godly) Love Worldly (Secular) Love
Nature An action and a commitment A feeling or a phase
Focus Others-centered; seeks to serve Self-centered; focuses on getting
Condition Unconditional; given even to enemies Conditional; based on what one receives
Source Originates from God through the Holy Spirit Originates from human emotionsand desires

The Ultimate Example

The Bible points to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as the perfect demonstration of love.
  • John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son...".
  • Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us".
This standard requires believers to love even those who are "unlovely" or who may never reciprocate the affection.

“This love means living in obedience to whatever God commands us. For to walk in love toward one another is the unifying commandment we’ve heard from the beginning.”
